5/27/2023 0 Comments Martin luther king letter![]() The envelope that contained the letter is also in Special Collections.ĭr. ![]() In 2006, his wife, Ann, generously donated the letter to the University. Recently, University Library Special Collections digitized the 21-page Letter from Birmingham Jail to offer readers a chance to experience its impact. The letter was copied by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and mailed to other clergymen throughout the state. One of those recipients was Methodist minister Rev. While there, he wrote notes in the margins of the Birmingham News, reaching out to most of the eight white clergymen. Those notes, passed through a jail trustee and then to King’s lawyer, were transcribed by a secretary and compiled into a letter that would then be sent out to seven of the eight clergymen. The Kennedy administration intervened on his behalf, as his wife had recently given birth. King was arrested later that day and spent 9 days in the Birmingham City Jail, including time in solitary confinement. He wasn’t allowed to make a phone call. Martin Luther King Jr. was in Atlanta at the time and decided to travel to Birmingham to help mobilize the moderate movement. It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954) saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades-all before his suicide at age forty-one. In Dante's time, there were two major political factions, the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. In contrast, the HRE maintained that the papacy had claim only to religious matters, not to temporal matters. The cause of this struggle was the papal claim that it also had authority over temporal matters, that is, the ruling of the government and other secular matters. Each claimed to be of divine origin and to be indispensable to the welfare of mankind. Throughout the Middle Ages, politics was dominated by the struggle between the two greatest powers of that age: the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire (HRE). ![]() 5/26/2023 0 Comments Truman mccullough book review![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * “ Truman” by David McCullough – This 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning classic is easily the best-read Truman biography and was reportedly a major catalyst for the 33rd president’s enhanced reputation. And yet during the last several decades his legacy has been completely reassessed and Truman is now widely ranked among the top ten presidents in our nation’s history! (I’m sympathetic with the re-evaluation but not sure I would go that far.)ĭuring the past seven weeks I read four biographies of Truman totaling a little more than two thousand pages. ![]() (But, alas, only Truman was faced with the decision about whether to drop an atomic bomb…)Īt the end of his presidency, Truman’s reputation was the poorest of any modern-day president. The similarities in their lives and personalities are incredibly striking. You can call me crazy, but in many ways Harry Truman reminds me of a mid-western Calvin Coolidge. He possessed no business acumen and almost every venture he attempted failed he had a reputation for being impeccably honest but was sponsored by a disreputable political boss and he seemed to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time – on the battlefield and in politics. It’s a sentiment I find hard to refute…and yet I found several aspects of his life fascinating. Harry Truman has a reputation for being a bit boring. ![]() 5/26/2023 0 Comments Life 3.0 elon musk![]() ![]() Thus begins the adventure for both Ford and Author that will take them to the recently stolen Heart of Gold starship and to the planet Magrathea where Author will find out about the true origins of Earth and why two little white mice want the question to the ultimate answer of 42.
